The Walking Dead Ends But Starts Three Spinoff Series

AMC ends The Walking Dead but starts future for three spinoff series featuring Rick and Michonne, then Daryl, and for Maggie and Negan. We wonder if the series really actually ended at all. Although, November 20 was truly its last episode after 11 years of run. Many fans enjoyed following the story of the survivors. Even more had specific seasons as their favorites.

But there are those who also think that the show actually overstayed their welcome. In fact, some say that the series should have ended at season 5. Still, the achievement of the show is undoubtedly commendable. Considering that it gave birth to other series as well. From The Walking Dead there is now an existing ‘universe’ where a post-apocalyptic earth ridden with zombies exists.

Two of the most awaited and watched characters of the show returned at the series finale. Interestingly, the showrunners confirm three series coming for the franchise. Talking about the developing spin offs of The Walking Dead, Angela Kang and Scott Gimple explains how they wrapped up the original series. Furthermore, they discussed what the future holds for what Gimple calls The Walking Dead Universe. In an article uploaded in Deadline, Kang says:

It was really important to us to try to close the chapter of this show and this story, but we know we have to leave some doors open to go into the future stories. So, in some ways, the setup for where that goes is sort of up to the new shows. Scott and I talked about it and the feeling was like how do we just leave the door cracked without kind of, you know, forcing the other new shows into like exactly what that is.

From that description, the showrunners seem to just close the story for one aspect of that universe. However, for Rick, Michonne, Darryl, Negan and Maggie, there are still new stories they can tell. Gimple added to this with:

I will say thematically this is about a group that has finally achieved some peace, and what are they going to do with it? And Maggie is thinking about the future. But that to me that’s…you know, Angela and I had talked about that. I mean, that’s a logical extension of where things are going with this group. Like, you know what, maybe we should go out into the world and see what’s up now that we found this peace. Like, we’re strong enough to do that.

Upcoming series starring Lauren Cohan as Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan is The Walking Dead: Dead City. The two characters find themselves in post-apocalyptic New York City. Without much detail, audiences assume that the new city will put the two characters’ judgements, morals and decisions to the test. Whereas the untitled series of Rick and Michonne starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira has been in development for quite some time now. For them, the story appears to revolve around finding and saving each other. As for Daryl, as Norman Reedus portrays, his search is about to begin.

The Walking Dead franchise has been and always will be a post-apocalyptic drama. Beyond those undead, their struggles to find people whom they belong to and protect has been what the overarching story is for everyone. Beyond the political issues and factions, the show keeps showing people protect their own people. In Gimple’s words:

The thing that keeps them going is the family that they have.
