Creator Jim Starlin Believes Thanos May Reappear In MCU

Jim Starlin shares his thoughts about the future of MCU going further musing that Thanos may just reappear due to the multiverse element. Years after Avengers: Endgame, people are still talking about Starlin’s Mad Titan Thanos. Definitely, the character is a worthy villain bringing years of storytelling to a conclusion. Even now, audiences keep bringing Thanos into discussion. Even the in the MCU, stories that follow Endgame keeps the events woven into the narrative. In Phase 4 projects, the events of Endgame still reverberate. Naturally, Marvel keeps everything connected. Furthermore, it’s current feat of bringing the multiverse and time variance on the game table makes for broader play.

Thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we got the multiverse. Likewise, thanks to Avengers: Endgame and Disney Plus Loki series, we have the time variants. Among all the other stories that will come, new characters can easily slide into the MCU. Also, because of these, previously “ended” characters can come back in some form or another.

Upcoming Multiverse Saga featuring the much awaited MCU movies with Avengers on their titles, can certainly welcome Thanos back in the story. Jim Starlin mentions that Marvel is thinking about bringing the character back but definitely along the lines that use the multiverse narrative. In his interview with inverse.com, he even stated that the studio seems to be ‘running out’. In the article, he said:

I’ve heard Marvel may want to use some other characters I’ve done. I think they’re running out. Now that they’ve got this multiverse, there’s the possibility of bringing back Thanos. And with Thanos, that opens up possibilities for other characters.

This supports the idea that Marvel is at its point that they are needing more characters because of the multiverse. Because they were able to successfully introduce the concept, people are not expecting more. Meaning: more stories, more characters and more interconnected challenges for all existing and future heroes and villains. Starlin also shared that the studio still has some characters that they haven’t utilized yet.

There are a few that they haven’t used, like the Blood Brothers.

However, there are also characters that MCU has just introduced that have yet to delve into further. These are Eros and Pip as MCU introduced in the post credit scene of Eternals. Starlin states:

I knew Eros was coming but I didn’t know about Pip, which is really surprising and funny, because for the last three or four years, every time I see Kevin Feige, I’ve lobbied to get Pip in there. He never said a word. He’s very close-lipped

There were rumors and you hear enough stuff. They didn’t tell me anything. They never tell me anything directly.

On how the two characters will play into the MCU, Jim Starlin says:

Pip will be the comic relief. He’s also a teleporter and that brings in all sorts of possibilities.

Eros, on the other hand, he’s an interesting one. I have no idea what they’re going to do with him. I sort of left him as a sociopath and he is sort of a sexual predator. So I’ll be curious to see how the MCU Eros fares up against the other one. Especially in this day and age. So that’s always a tricky one.

Another character is Adam Warlock. This character enters the MCU through Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thanos and Warlock also have a lot in common and have an association, and they got a fairly good star for Adam Warlock. I doubt if he’s going to be in just this one movie.

When they did the casting call for Adam Warlock, it wasn’t just for Adam Warlock. It was Adam Warlock/Magus — I assume. So I’ll be curious to see what happens here.

Marvel Studios still has a treasure trove of characters to mine. However, what makes sense for the presentation of these characters and stories into the cinematic universe bears a great weight. People will accept new characters and stories as long as it makes sense in the story.

So far, Marvel has done well with what they can. And now, they are in the position to explore and push the envelope of storytelling further.
