Sydney Sweeney, all praises on Jane Fonda’s iconic Barbarella as she looks forward to starring and producing the reboot. AP Entertainment posted an interview with the actress on twitter displaying her hopes to give justice to the portrayal of the eponymous character.
New to her role as a producer, the actress means to introduce Barbarella to the new generation of moviegoers. From her successful projects in HBO’s Euphoria and The White Lotus, she adds Barbarella to her future roster of movies together with Sony’s Madame Web.

Meanwhile, details on how the original raunchy sci-fi film will be reintroduced or modernized for today’s audience is unclear. Currently, the project has yet to announce its director and writer. Understandably, many online comments indicate surprise that this movie even gets a reboot. Eventually, curiosity sets in and people are now asking how exactly do they plan to reboot Barbarella.
Still, the question seems mindboggling as the original movie was somehow wrought risque humor. Mainly, the story depicted Jane Fonda innocent despite being the desirable siren the movie decks her out to be. Discovering ‘womanly abilities’ to overcome a ‘threatening’ situation was the somewhat kinky comedy that the movie revolved in. However, it’s evident that Sweeney means to redefine sexy comedy. In the interview quoted in comicbookmovie, she said with utmost admiration to the original actress:
Jane Fonda…she created such an incredible, iconic character. And I want to, hopefully, just fill those shoes and give more to a whole new generation – her outfits, sci-fi, the fun of the story. So, I’m looking forward to it.
Notably, for those who are familiar with the 1960s movie, the set and costume were definitely bold in its concepts. Of course, these points to design, sci-fi genre and fun as the main drivers of the movie for Sweeney. Indeed, as the producer, she may already have these in mind and its up to the director and writer to make it happen for her.

The 1968 movie that Roger Vadim directed starred Jane Fonda as the 5-Star Double Rated Astral Navigatrix. The movie itself is from the comic book series of the same name that Jean-Claude Forest created. In the trailer, the movie described Fonda as the innocent and most beautiful creature of the 41st century. On a mission, Barbarella means to find and stop an evil scientist who go by the name Durand-Durand. Apparently, the scientist has created a positronic ray that the Unified Earth Government fears to be the end of humankind.
Again, we ask the question as to how would the reboot deliver a recreation of the original movie? Definitely, your guess is as good as ours. In any case, Sydney Sweeney to star and to produce Sony’s Barbarella would be interesting to watch out for.
