Star Wars Andor Showrunner Says No To Mere Fan Service

Star Wars Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy says that the series makes a point not to do major fan service in its storytelling and execution. Instead, it will tell a story all its own. However, there will be instances that they will bring characters into the show that may be familiar. But, the presence of these characters will do more than just a mere cameo.

In just another days’ wait, Disney Plus will be streaming its three episode premiere for Star Wars Andor. IGN just posted their report stating that the showrunner Tony Gilroy had the mandate that they just want to be real and honest.

In the interview, the showrunner discloses that their main concern is to tell the story. He said:

We didn’t want to do anything that was fan service. We never wanted to have anything… the mandate in the very beginning was that it would be as absolutely non-cynical as it could possibly be, that the show would just be real and honest.

The twelve episodes which will jumpstart with a 3-episode premier on September 21 (just a few hours away really!) will tell the story about the rebellion’s birth. Undoubtedly, that alone is a premise that will involve heavy storytelling without the need of elements just for fan service. The series is setting itself apart from the existing Disney Plus Star Wars projects such as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book Of Boba Fett.

Not that they are thinking of moving entirely away from the Star Wars storyline. Instead, they want to focus on the story they want to tell within the Star Wars saga. The events happen some years before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The official synopsis of Star Wars Andor is as follows:

The Andor series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.

The series is Cassian Andor’s journey. Diego Luna brings Cassian Andor back to life, into the early years of the rebellion. This is the beginning, the steps for him to becoming the rebel leader he is in Rogue One. His path is outside the scope of the Skywalker Saga, let alone The Mandalorian. Although, there are still some characters who will appear in the series that have appeared in previous Star Wars movies. Their presence will be essential to the progression of the story, not just fan service.

Evidently, the presence of Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera as well as Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma are not the least bit cameos in the series. Their involvement in the development of the plot is highly important. Their contribution to Cassian Andor’s journey is indispensable. Gilroy further explains:

We will be introducing people along the way. I don’t think it’s any secret that Forest Whitaker is in the show… Saw Gerrera is in the show. There will be some other people. But when we bring them, we bring them because we need them and because there’s really some protein there, there’s something for them to really do.

Looking forward to watching new episode that bring us back to the time long ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
