When he was also asked if some characters are coming back to the series, he immediately answered with a chuckle:
No, because most of them are dead, I’ll try something to bring them back to Season 2. …maybe she (gesturing to HoYeon Jung) has a twin sister, you’ll see.
Squid Game took the world by storm even before they finished playing Red Light; Green Light. The creator hurdled many challenges while developing and writing his story. When it was finished, it took him years to finally find a company that would make Squid Game happen. It was fourteen years ago when he developed the series only to be turned down by production companies. The companies deemed it too violent and unrealistic at the time.
He put the story down and took on other projects as the years passed. Then in 2018, he re-wrote the script and took it to Netflix. Netflix had just began its operations in South Korea at the time. Executives impression of the story is a complete flip from the ones whom he got to talk to years before from other companies. The Netflix executives actually thought the story to be realistic and gave it the green light.

Recalling the years, Hwang told THR back in 2021:
The response that I got after 10 years was that it was, in fact, very realistic — that there are probably people playing this game somewhere in the world. And I think the pandemic also accelerated the situation a bit as well. And so the fact that this story was no longer not realistic, that it was no longer absurd, but that it was something that was very in touch with reality after a decade, it saddened me a little bit as a person, but it also brought me joy as a creator.
One character is certain to come back and he is Gi-Hun. Elle.com reports that the creator of Squid Game declares:
I will promise you this… Gi-Hun will come back, and he will do something for the world.

They say that over in Netflix, they do aim to release it by the end of 2022. Apparently, challenges of the global crisis affecting the development and there are still details that need to be sorted out with the creator. Everyone there in Netflix wants the Season 2 to happen. It’s just a question of timing and schedule.
We sure hope season 2 doesn’t take as long as the first in development, which took about a decade to complete. Gi-Hun might grow out his red hair by then.
