Sloclap’s SIFU Gets A Live-Action Adaptation With Story Kitchen

The videogame SIFU from Sloclap is getting a live-action adaptation with Story Kitchen and Derek Kolstad is doing the script. Yes, the writer behind the phenomenal John Wick franchise that starred Keanu Reeves is now penning the screen adaptation of SIFU. In a time where more and people notice that videogames have just as engaging a story as any series or movie, a lot are getting live-action or animated adaptation.

Other than franchises that are getting reboots, revivals or continuations, videogame franchises are proving to be strong movie or series franchises as well. Deadline includes in its report that Kolstad will also be among the producers. The producers joining him are Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, Dan Jevons, Timothy I. Stevenson and Jeff Ludwig.

Sloclap developed and released Sifu, a beat ’em up video game that Kung Fu movies inspired. The game has the revenge arc as its main premise. Sifu is refers to Master in Cantonese. The story begins with a group of young warriors defeating and killing a Sifu whose son survived with the help of a talisman. The son having experienced resurrection then vows to avenge his father. After almost ten years he comes back to face the ones who murdered his father. In the game, every time the son dies and gets resurrected, he would become more skillful, stronger but he also ages and loses some points on health. As he ages, there becomes a point where the player permanently dies. Thus, the player has to start over from the first resurrection and physical stats.

Sifu has every dramatic element you can see in a Kung Fu drama feature. There is the tragedy of the hero who comes back to take revenge on those who did him evil. Through the course of the adventure is his strengthening and developing of skills. Then the buildup of the actual fight against the main villain. In the end, he gets to avenge his loved ones but also find out about his past. The reason why the villains attacked them in the first place.

Sloclap released the game just February this year. In about a month, it already sold more than 1 million copies. Needless to say, the game was a hit. Its release covered Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. And, just last month, on the Nintendo Switch. Positive reviews came its way as its gameplay, design and story received praise.

It is one of the top contenders for Best Independent Game, Best Fighting Game and Best Action Game in the coming The Game Awards this 8th of December.

Kolstad is currently busy with the series adaptation of Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell. A 16-episode adaptation of the game for Netflix. It’s currently in production and Deadline adds that the series is already in the works for two seasons.

The premise pretty much reminds me of Live, Die, Repeat (Edge of Tomorrow) but mixed with the aging process. We keep our eye open for more updates about the movie adaptation of SIFU.
