Shang-Chi Director Destin Daniel Cretton Helms Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

Just days after the announcement of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, we got the news that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton will be helming the film.

The hype is high for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. It was just days ago that the studio announced Phases five and six. More than a week ago, we didn’t even know when Phase four will end. Now, we know that it will reach its conclusion soon. After which, so much more things are planned for the next three years.

Even before the announcement, fans have been wondering who will be directing the new Avengers films. A lot were excited to see the Russo Brothers’ return. This is because they successfully made Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame(2019). Undoubtedly, fans just loved that regardless of how many characters were there, each of them had moments that progress their personal stories. Above all, it’s not easy to balance characters. Case in point: Marvel’s Eternals (2021). The film felt like it was in a rush to finish the story.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton will be returning to the MCU. Cretton, known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) will direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

Shang-Chi did pretty well at the box office. It’s not the highest-grossing film in the MCU. But the film did release during the Pandemic, so it wasn’t bad overall. Rotten Tomatoes shows that there is a 91% approval rating from official reviews and a 98% audience score.

For now, the only actor we can verify who will be in the film is Jonathan Majors. Expectedly, he will return as Kang The Conqueror, the main villain of the film. The last time we saw Majors’ was  when he played “He Who Remains” in Disney Plus’ Loki. In the series, “He Who Remains” is a variant of Kang. In addition, he is already expected to return in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Since Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is an Avengers film, we can expect several heroes to come together for the crucial moments.

In the comics, the Kang Dynasty is a major event. Specifically, Marvel released the comics from June 2001 up to August 2002. The Avengers series was written by Kurk Busiek with art by Alan Davis, Rick Remender, Ivan Reis, Kieron Dwyer, and Manuela Garcia. Definitely, the movie will surely be based on the comic but I doubt that they’ll cover most of it. I do wonder if the the Kang Dynasty will have major cliffhanger just like Avengers: Infinity War. Nevertheless, we are sure the events of Kang Dynasty will lead into Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set to arrive in theaters on May 2025.
