Sequel To Keanu Reeves Constantine Still A Go

The 2005 Constantine sequel is still a ‘go’ starring Keanu Reeves which will also have director Francis Lawrence and writer Akiva Goldsman. We previously reported this September, and the sequel is indeed happening. Furthermore, all three are definitely on board the project. The question now is how is the script coming along? And whether they have a timetable already in place for the production.

The answer: Reeves, Lawrence and Goldsman are actively working on it.

In an interview for a separate project, Slumberland, the director Francis Lawrence tells comicbook that the three of them are getting the story right. Not having the script yet is actually a sign they are trying to cover all grounds. At the same time, making sure that the story is right. Lawrence answers:

We don’t have a script, but Keanu, me, and Akiva [Goldsman] who all worked on the first one together have all been trying over the years to get another one going. It’s been tricky because of the DC/Vertigo world and who owns the character and who has control over the characters, trying to get the right people to go forward. We’ve got that now and now we need the story. We’d all love to do it.

Apparently, they have been pondering on the sequel for years. Only, as corporate policies go, copyright ownership and distribution rights have been very tricky. Now, after the momentous transition into Warner Bros Discovery and the birth of DC Studios, things are looking clearer. Indeed, the director sounds positive about the progress of the sequel now more than ever.

As for schedule, the only item that is indicative of Reeves’ schedule getting more accommodating is him letting go of Devil in the White City. Other than that, Reeves has BRZRKR and Ballerina, which are both in pre-production. Meanwhile, Lawrence is currently filming The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Also, his Bioshock is in pre-production. For Goldsman, it’s likely that he is simultaneously working on Constantine 2 and the screenplay adaptation of Ringworld for Amazon Studios, Startling and MGM Television.

There is no secret that the new DC Studios mean to be better at listening to fans. Almost immediately, people are already becoming more hopeful in the future projects they are developing. Many positive news about characters and movies they plan to make are making it into online discussion. These very same discussions lead them to get the bigger picture of what the audience wants. And now, everybody wants a revisit to favorites and an introduction of long-favored characters into the big screen.

2005 Constantine is still on HBO Max. The story will continue.
