Sebastian Stan recently said Bucky’s future in the MCU is unknown to him. Is this something to worry about or is it standard MCU business?
It’s no secret that Bucky Barnes is a fan favorite, much to the credit of Sebastian Stan‘s portrayal of the former Hydra super soldier.
Having watched his story play out over the course of seven Marvel movies, from Captain America: The First Avenger to Avengers: Endgame it would seem he was headed in a new direction by the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Bucky had resolved and accepted the role he had played as The Winter Soldier by ridding himself of the haunting memories that plagued him.
After 100 years, Bucky Barnes was finally free to move on to whatever his future may hold, to find his place.
However, there is no indication that his story will continue any time soon.
Sebastian Stan Says Bucky’s Future In MCU Is Unknown
During an interview with Collider, Sebastian Stan responded with “I don’t know.” when asked when Bucky would be making his next appearance in the MCU.
As usual, Marvel Studios is keeping a tight lip on future plans.
It is also well-known that even when actors have information about upcoming or future Marvel projects, they are not allowed to talk about it.
Looking at you, Tom Holland.
In this case, however, it would seem that there really isn’t any information Stan can provide.
He went on to say:
I have no clue, but look, I think it’s sort of about seeing what’s next for him, right?
Stan feels that by the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Bucky found a “sense of place and sense of family”, which would lead the character down a new path.
Bucky’s Future Could Look Very Different
The character of Bucky Barnes went through a dramatic transformation in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
It’s not far-fetched to assume that his ‘fighter instinct’ is not as acute as before, or at the very least has been suppressed.
What does that mean for the character?
Well, it means the continuation of his story, in whatever form that might be, may look very different.
Sebastian Stan commented:
To some extent, the show, I felt, really graduated him to another level of experience and taking on his past a lot better… So he’s in a pretty good spot right now. I’d be curious to see what the next interesting thing that we could tell with him would be, and as you well know, that is above my pay grade. There are far wiser men and women who are making those decisions.
However, we could see the persona of The Winter Soldier return in Captain America 4.
Though there has been no information forthcoming about that film yet.
Will Bucky eventually take on the mantle of Captain America, like many of us thought he would in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?
Only time will tell.
You can see Sebastian Stan in his current film, 355, in theaters now.
