Scott Bakula Passes Up Role On Quantum Leap Reboot

Quantum Leap gets a reboot for NBC and contrary to what fans are expecting, Scott Bakula bowed out on the chance to be part of the series. The time traveling sci-fi series is getting a reboot but people notice that the trailer does not have its original lead. Scott Bakula takes to twitter to address his absence on the upcoming show.

While the actor did not say the reason why he didn’t take on the project, he did say he read the script. Also, he does express his anticipation of the show in somewhat continuing the 90s story.

The actor posted the succeeding statements as reply to the original tweet:

2/5 I have no connection with the new show, either in front of the camera or behind it. In January, the pilot was sold and a script was sent to me because the character of Sam Beckett was in it, which makes sense, right? As so many of you have been asking me the last…

(3/5) several months, “How could you do QL without Sam?”(or Al, for that matter) Well, I guess we’re about to find out. That’s the story. As the show has always been near and dear to my heart, it was a very difficult decision to pass on the project, a decision…

(4/5) that has upset and confused so many fans of the original series. However, the idea of anyone ‘leaping’ around in time and walking a mile in someone else’s shoes, remains a very appealing concept and so worthy of exploration, especially given the current state of mankind…

(5/5) In that spirit, I am crossing my fingers that this new cast and crew are lucky enough to tap into the magic that propelled the original Quantum Leap into the hearts and minds of generations past and present. I wish them good luck and happy leaping! SB

From 1989 up to 1993, the series captured audiences in the idea that a person gets to ‘leap’ back in time. The difference is, the time traveler leaps through consciousness. Further, his consciousness transfers to anyone within his lifetime. The random person’s consciousness then occupy the body he has in the present.

Scott Bakula is Dr. Sam Beckett the time traveler. His co-star Dean Stockwell portrays Admiral Al Calavicci, who assists Dr. Beckett throughout his leaps. Each leap into a different person’s life in the past is actually a personal pivotal moment for the person. Dr. Sam Beckett takes it upon himself to help the person through actions that correct the misstep they did in the past. By the end of the series, audiences only read the statement that Dr. Sam Beckett never got the chance to get home.

In Scott Bakula’s posts, it would seem that after reading the script, he has made the decision to just let a new character take on the Leaps. In a way, it’s his leap of faith for the series. The Quantum Leap reboot series will premiere on September 19, 2022. Actor for the reboot series is Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Seong. Joining Lee are Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanrisa Lee. IGN posts the new trailer and premise for the reboot series. Apparently, the upcoming series will feature not only a tandem throughout the show but also a support team for the time traveler.

Perhaps it’s indeed time for a new team to take the leaps.
