Recent news indicate that the Duffer Brothers said Sadie Sink’s character Max could have died in Season 4 Stranger Things on Netflix. According to Matt and Ross Duffer, they initially planned Max to die in Season 4. Well, in effect she did. For a minute and a half, Maxine Mayfield did die.
Sadie Sink definitely shined in the season. Her role, Max, is instrumental in totally weakening Vecna. A report from Variety reveals that the showrunners actually considered killing Max in the story permanently. Ross Duffer actually said:
It was discussed as a possibility. For a while that is what was going to happen. But we ended up in this… we wanted to end it with a little more of a question at the end of the season. It’s still really dark and if Max is going to be okay, we just don’t really know. We wanted to leave it up in the air moving forward into Season 5.

Matt Duffer says that the latest season of Stranger Things is akin to what Empire Strikes Back is to the original Star Wars trilogy. In his words:
…we wanted them to actually lose. We wanted our characters to experience what that felt like. That was the big idea coming into Season 4, that they were going to lose. We were going to introduce Vecna and they were going to lose to him. That sets our characters up for what will be the ultimate final confrontation with Vecna and with the Upside Down in Season 5.
It’s no secret that the Duffer Brothers have taken inspiration from various iconic movies and franchises for their work. In fact, Max’s condition at the end of Season 4 is also compared to Han Solo being frozen in Carbonite from the same movie they cited as inspiration. Furthermore, fans point out that Millie Bobbie Brown’s Eleven actually did a Luke Skywalker decision to face Vader even though Yoda said he wasn’t ready. El faced Vecna despite Papa saying she is not strong enough.

The good news is, if they are comparing Max to Han Solo then Season 5 Stranger Things will feature her getting fully recovered. Sadie Sink still has a huge part to play for the finale season. The same cannot be said for Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson. Matt Duffer shares:
We fell in love with Eddie. We fell in love with Joe. I think everybody in the cast fell in love with him. We knew he had to die…that’s part of me that wishes he still around for Season 5. That’s ultimately how you want to feel.
Is there a chance that they can write some flashback scenes with Eddie into the finale season though? Even though it wouldn’t be realistic to think they’d be able to redeem Eddie in the Right Side Up, fans hope at least they can give him a proper send off. He is a hero after all.
Friends don’t lie.
