In a recent interview, (via Small Screen) Steve Asbell, President of 20th Century Studios shared that the upcoming Predator 5 movie will be a standalone movie set in 1700s.
Asbell also declared that they are rather busy despite the pandemic. The studio will release 10 or more movies for Hulu streaming and 3 movies for the theatres by 2023. In the interview he also shared updates on directors they have renewed contracts with as well as projects that are ongoing. He further cited projects due for release in just a few months’ time.
One notable point from his interview with The Hollywood Reporter is his excitement about the upcoming Predator movie they have entitled: Prey.
Predator 5 Is A 1700s Standalone Movie From 20th Century Studios
He says:
…coolest of all for fans, we get to find bold takes on beloved Fox properties. You can take big creative swings — which you’ll see with Prey, which we’ll launch this summer. A Predator movie set in the Great Plains in 1719 by Dan Trachtenberg.
We can actually expect a Predator movie come June this year!
The setting implies that the creature exists among human beings for centuries. In fact in other movies, the Predator has implied existence since the time of Ancient Egypt.
Prey will take the character named Naru, a Comanche woman who becomes a warrior who will face the Predator.
Director Dan Trachtenberg helms the project with writer Patrick Aison.
Amber Midthunder star stars as Naru in the movie.
Dan Trachtenberg directed various TV series episodes from Waterworld, The Lost Symbol, The Boys, and Black Mirror. Also known for his work on 10 Cloverfield Lane, which got him a nomination for Outstanding Directing – First-Time Feature Film. A nomination from Directors’ Guild of America.
Amber Midthunder portrayed Rosa Ortecho in the TV series Roswell, New Mexico, Tantoo in The Ice Road and Kerry Loudermilk in Legion. Suffice to say, she will not find fight scenes or action scenes too difficult to accomplish.

There’re already assumptions going about online saying Prey may be a retelling of the original Predator movie just in a different time setting. As the Predator has been on the shelf for some time now, a new movie is long overdue and fans are only happily anticipating its arrival.
Even if it tells the same story, new place and time brings a different feel to the mix.
Whether the release is for theatrical or direct to video or online streaming, fans will be excited to watch it.
