Producer Chris Meledandri is Miyamoto’s partner at Illumination Entertainment. Illumination Entertainment is the company on board in adapting the Super Mario Bros. video game into a movie. They are the same company behind Minions with a new movie Minions: The Rise of Gru coming this July.
Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s upcoming adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. video game series has been delayed to 2023. Other previous projects include: Sing and Sing 2, The Secret Life of Pets, Despicable Me, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and Hop.
Its parent company, Universal Pictures, has in effect moved the release of Puss in Boots to fill the holiday spot. DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was to show on September 23, now it takes the December release date.
Christ Pratt leads the cast of actors for the movie lending Mario his voice. Charlie Day will voice for Luigi. Anya Taylor-Joy will be Princess Peach. Keegan-Michael Key is Toad. Jack Black, Kevin Michael Richarson, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco and Seth Rogen will lend their voices to Bowser, Kamek, Cranky Kong, Foreman Spike and Donkey Kong, respectively. Fans have been waiting for this movie to happen for decades. It was only in 2018 when Nintendo and Universal announced their partnership did it truly have the best chance at happening. With this announcement, it appears we will have to wait one year more. But, Miyamoto himself promises it’ll be worth the wait.
How ever the plotline will be for the movie, fans expect the core story to be intact. The story that Mario saves kidnapped Princess Peach after going through Bowser’s obstacles. The difference will lie on the way the story will be told. Also, we hear that Pratt won’t be doing an Italian accent for the lead plumber. We wonder how that will go. There is also the speculation that they will do a “self-aware” plot where characters know they are from a video game and they are just trying to live their lives.
From an 8-month wait, now we have to add 4 more before we see the gang together in a movie.
