Netflix Gives Greenlight To 2nd Round Squid Game

It’s inevitable, fans’ knew it’s coming as soon as the envelopes slapped at the train station: the 2nd round of Squid Game officially gets the greenlight from Netflix.

Squid Game director, writer and executive producer Hwang Dong-Hyuk has said that a second season is indeed inevitable.

Director Hwang knew it. The fans knew it. Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos knew it. Now, it is official.

Squid Game is phenomenal to describe it at the least. At the height of the pandemic no less. The story played with the people’s financial dependence. It toyed with the idea that people, not just material, can be bought. It even brought forth actual games inspired by the series, sans the need for the bright bowed body boxes.

Product merch from apparel to toys to replica of actual series props have only added to the revenue and popularity of the show. An IMDb rating of 8/10 from 420K respondents. It got 95% average on the Tomatometer and 83% average on Audience Score. Suddenly, people knew of the song in Red Light Green Light Game. Kids started recreating the Dalgona Candy scene as a party game on their Squid Game themed birthdays. And don’t get us started with the Halloween favorite costumes during the hype.

Last year, Los Angeles Times wrote that because of Squid Game, the streaming giant Netflix grew even bigger. It got additional 4.38 million subscribers as of October 2021. Further, they claimed that analysts expected about 3.78 million more of the paying subscribers in the last quarter of that year.

Netflix’s revenue rose 16% to $7.48 billion in the third quarter, compared with 2020 numbers. Net income was $1.45 billion, up from $790 million a year earlier. All of these attributed to Squid Game.

Now, Netflix has officially announced it is truly coming. Back in May we have reported that Director Hwang is still in development for the second season. A fact that wasn’t very happily accepted by fans. For one thing, if the timeframe of development for the first season is any indication, fans thought 10 years would be too long a wait. However, the Netflix announcement is truly happy news. We definitely don’t have to wait too long.

In fact, the creator already gave hints as to what we can expect with the upcoming second round of games. In his writing, he says:

It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year.
But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever.

As the writer, director and producer of ‘Squid Game’, a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.

And now, Gi-hun returns.
The Front Man returns.
Season 2 is coming.
The man in the suit with ddakji might be back.
You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.

Join us once more for a whole new round.

Did he just say that The Doll in the first game Red Light; Green Light has a boyfriend? That in itself is quite intriguing. What kind of game would Cheol-su be “facilitating” like his girlfriend?

Given the green light is actually lit for Squid Game, what else can we expect from the show? Earlier this year The Verge reported that Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that the miniseries will return. He even stated that:

The Squid Game universe has just begun.
