Neill Blomkamp, writer and director for District 9 finally updates fans that the sequel is coming “in near future”.
2010 Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay Academy Award Nominee for District 9, Neill Blomkamp together with Terri Tatchell is developing District 10.
A report from Dexerto.com shows the writer and director confirming the development.
District 9 delighted audiences and critics alike back in 2009. Blomkamp co-wrote the movie with Tatchell. Moreover, Blomkamp directed the movie that covered an alternate Earth society laden with dramatic political, cultural and cross-extraterrestrial issues. The premise being that Earth welcomed the arrival of the alien race as refugees. Upon arrival, the South African government granted the aliens an area that became District 9. Years pass and District 9 became a slum area with people complaining about the aliens. They snidely call the aliens “prawns” affecting general Earthly way of life.

Quite reminiscent of a faction story where one faction is weaker or less fortunate than the other. District 9 depicted societal problems that involve prejudice, abuse of power, exploitation, even prostitution to name some. It showed the capacity of the humans to be welcoming and accepting at the same time exploitative and domineering. The movie also shed light on greed in bureaucracy and disinformation of the public.
The main character is Sharlto Copley’s Wikus van de Merwe. An employee from Multinational United got exposed to alien substance that somehow slowly transforms him from human to prawn. With only a thin line of hope, he escapes becoming an experiment himself. Wikus turns to District 9 to find help. The very substance that was slowly changing him became the answer to their escape.
The movie ended with much promise for a sequel. Wikus is fully transformed into an alien that awaits the return of his alien friend. Once his friend returns, he is ready to receive the cure and revert to his human self. Or so he believes.
Despite the very good reception of the movie among critics and audiences, District 9 has yet to deliver its sequel. Apparently, 90% Fresh on the Tomatometer and 82% Audience Score and a Metacritic rating of Must See 81 Metascore and 8.1 User score are not enough. The movie had a production budget of $30M that healthily churned in $212.45M in the WorldWide Box Office. That is 7.1 times the budget. There is no question that a sequel should be done.
But what gives?

In a discussion with Dexerto about his new battle royale game, Off The Grid, Blomkamp offered a promising update:
I am still working on it…the answer is it’s within the near future.
Furthermore, checking on Blomkamp’s twitter we find he does confirm it is in the works. In fact, he is writing it with Tatchell and Copley, his co-writer and lead character of the movie respectively.
Fans have been looking forward to the sequel since 2009. If the creator says it’s coming soon, then it’ll be worth the wait.
