Midnight Mass Creator Means To Make Stephen King’s The Dark Tower

Midnight Mass creator, Mike Flanagan, has the rights to adapt Stephen King’s The Dark Tower even before closing his Amazon deal. In fact, Flanagan even envisions a story breakdown for five seasons and two stand-alone features. Deadline quotes that he considers this his Holy Grail of a project in life, it might just get into Amazon too. But the director-writer has not made anything official. Except that he has secured the rights.

Author Stephen King created The Dark Tower series as what his site calls his ‘magnum opus’. Drawing inspiration from various literary legends, King has The Dark Tower as the connection of all his other works. The series has eight novels, one short story, and a children’s book. Out of these, Flanagan clearly sees five seasons and two movies. Talking to Deadline, the director said:

Predating our deal with Amazon, we acquired the rights to The Dark Tower. Which if you know anything about me, you know it has been my Holy Grail of a project for most of my life. We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point — you don’t know. But that’s something we’ve been developing ourselves and are really passionate about finally getting it up on its feet at some point.

Aside from Midnight Mass, Flanagan created award-winning series such as Doctor Sleep, Absentia and Hush to name a few. Even though The Dark Tower has already existing adaptations before, Flanagan has his own vision for the series. If his work on Midnight Mass alone is any indication, fans are positive he will be able to deliver superbly.

The Dark Tower is the series to weave Stephen Kings’ different universes into one. It would be interesting to see how his stories It and Salem’s Lot would connect to Insomnia and Black House. There are even connections to The Stand, Hearts in Atlantis, The Eyes of the Dragon, The Shining and Cell.

Indeed, because of the ambitious coverage, it won’t surprise us if Amazon picks this up for their library as well. After Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power, Amazon is primed for another franchise series. Flanagan shares about his conversations with Stephen King:

This happened because I sent him a very, very detailed outline of what I wanted to do with it. And it was in response to that, that he gave us the rights. A project like this, I wouldn’t want to be involved in it at all If we were taking it in a direction that was going to be blasphemous to the Stephen King material, but he’s been very, very supportive and very excited about what we’d like to do with it.

What a time to be a Stephen King fan!
