The Hollywood Reporter brings the new movie project to the spotlight with the news that J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot will make the movie happen.

Bad Robot’s president of motion pictures, Hannah Minghella, said:

Before Hot Wheels became the global household name it is today, it was the dream of Elliot Handler, who was inventing and building toy cars at home in his Southern California garage. It’s that imagination, passion and risk-taking spirit that we want to capture in this film.

Kevin McKeon and Andrew Scannell represents Mattel Films, while Peter Dodd represents Warner Bros. Pictures. Minghella and Jon Cohen lead for Bad Robot.

As the project is still in very early development, the movie plot is still unknown. Although, the official description says:

The high-throttle action film will bring to life this beloved, multi-generational franchise and showcase some of the world’s hottest and sleekest cars, monster trucks and motorcycles.

It’s very interesting that movie outfits have lately tapped the treasure trove of toy franchise. Companies have intrinsically tied toys and movies for so long due to merchandize and marketing. Sometimes companies create movies to sell toys and sometimes toys are made to sell movies. There is also the presence of comics and tv series tied to most intellectual properties.

The battle for intellectual property supremacy has been going on for years. Ever since companies banked on kids’ imagination, it has always been there. In the onset of the pandemic, all the streaming demands followed due to change in consumer behavior. Suddenly, audiences like continuity of all the things they loved during childhood. The children of the 80s and 90s are the adults that buy tickets and tickets for their kids nowadays. They are the same people who subscribe streaming services for their family.

We do expect the influx of more IPs such as Hot Wheels. There is always something to look forward to.
