Lucasfilm has its eyes on developing a series around the Indiana Jones franchise after Harrison Ford’s final movie in 2023. Indiana Jones 5, whose title is still a secret, is on schedule to whip into theaters on June 30, 2023. Under James Mangold’s direction, Ford said in this year’s D23:
I’m proud to say that this one is fantastic! …Indiana Jones movies are about mysteries and adventures but they are also about heart. I’m really, really happy that we have a really human story to tell. As well as a movie that will kick your ass.

Lucasfilm had Indiana Jones 5 as its jewel in the crown during its presentation. Indeed, people are now looking forward to see what Indy has in store. What kind of adventure is he gearing up to now. Even in his advanced years, he can still decipher cryptic maps, symbols and scriptures to find a long lost treasure. However, Ford may be done with the franchise after the 5th movie. In fact he practically vowed he would never fall for the audience again as Indy. This is it.
But, not for Disney. Not for Lucasfilm.
Apparently, Variety discloses that the studio is looking into the possibility of having a series revolving around Indiana Jones. While there isn’t anything specific whether a prequel, a sequel, a spin-off, live action or animated, everything is still unclear. Hopefully, after the movie has had its run in the theaters, they will be able to have a clearer idea on how to move forward with the franchise.
Definitely, Indiana Jones is not a type of franchise they want to keep in the shelf for longer than it has been. Especially now that they also have the mandate across all their studios to develop series and movies for both small and big screen at a specific number per year. Marvel is already doing it. They mean to duplicate this activity to the rest of their Content Group. 20th Century is also working its way to achieving this with its latest line of movies.

As of now, Lucasfilm is still developing the project. In fact, it’s still in the very early stages of incubation that they have yet to find a writer. Many believe that they can easily develop a series about Indiana Jones’ personal journey before he became the professional he is in the movies. Similar to Smallville for Superman. Where the series focused on Clark Kent’s self discovery and journey to becoming Superman. The series could be about Indy becoming Indiana.
Granted, they will really have to build on his world something like an alternate but really close to reality world. And, just how much of a source material has creator George Lucas made for the character, only Lucasfilm knows. Of course, this news is not without any qualms. People ask why? Maybe Lucasfilm will just answer, “because we can.”
