Speed was the 1994 Block Buster Hit movie Keanu Reeves shared billing with Sandra Bullock and Dennis Hopper. Reeves is LAPD SWAT Officer Jack Travern on a mission to save a passenger-filled bus from exploding via triggered bomb that Hopper’s character Howard Payne planted. Bullock is one of the passengers named Annie Porter who replaced driving the bus after the driver got injured. The planted bomb is set to detonate once the bus decelerates from the minimum speed of 50 miles per hour.
The movie catapulted Reeves into the action genre as Speed was a thrilling, action-packed and suspenseful viewer experience. With a budget of $30M, it generated $283.2M in the worldwide box office. Further, it ran in theaters for two months, $14.5M of it all in just its opening weekend. At the time, Speed got favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike. The movie got the Certified Fresh Tomato rating of 94% at 71 reviews and 76% Audience Score at 250+K ratings.
Reeves however, did not return for the movie’s sequel in 1997 entitled, Speed: Cruise Control. The sequel performed really weakly in the box office as well as garnering negative critical response. The sequel just did not cut it.

Perhaps Keanu Reeves is in a very nostalgic streak lately after his movies on Bill and Ted, and Matrix franchise. Speed truly had his name on the board for action movies. However, his refusal to take on the sequel bruised his career track. Is it possible that this is his way to correct and right by his character Jack Traven? There have also been talks about Sandra Bullock regretting the sequel or taking on any movie sequels. Will she come on board for this project in the light that Reeves is on it too?
The Reeves-Bullock team has proven favorable audience and box office response. The 2006 drama, fantasy, romance movie The Lakehouse had $114.8M to prove it. Add to the fact that the actors have had only good things to say about each other. Besides, it’s Keanu Reeves we’re talking about here. We do hope they get her on board for it should the third Speed really push through.
