Kat Coiro Helms 2 Episodes of ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’

Director Kat Coiro will direct the first two episodes of The Spiderwick Chronicles as well as executive produce the series for Disney Plus.

Disney Plus is set to stream the spellbinding children’s books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly BlackThe Spiderwick Chronicles feature adventures of the Grace children. The twins Simon and Jared with their older sister Mallory discover a world of fairies after moving into the Spiderwick Estate.

Deadline posts that Director Kat Coiro is now on board to direct the first two episodes of the series. Details as to the total number of episodes and delivery of content are still under wraps. However, it’s safe to say that the source material for the series will be the 2003-2004 published set of books. The books are: The Field Guide, The Seeing StoneLucinda’s SecretThe Ironwood Tree, and The Wrath of Mulgarath. There are also a number of companion books of the series namely Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around YouNotebook for Fantastical Observations, and Care and Feeding of Sprites. The said companion books were published 2005-2006.

Disney+ has described the series in development as:

…modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure.

The success of the first set of The Spiderwick Chronilcles paved the way for a second series. Books under the second series named Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles, include: The Nixie’s SongA Giant Problem, and The Wyrm King. Publishing years of these book are from 2007-2009. The existence of the second series could almost promise a second season should ratings and viewer engagement prove favorable.

Nickelodeon and Paramount produced and distributed a movie based on the books as well. The movie, of the same title, starred Freddie Highmore, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Short, and Seth Rogen. The first The Spiderwick Chronicles movie premiered premiered on February 14, 2008. Interestingly, the movie also had an accompanying video game around the same time.

Multi-award winning director Kat Coiro has just finished filming the much awaited MCU’s She Hulk which is now in its post-production. Prior to the Marvel series, she also directed Marry Me. Marry Me is a romantic comedy musical starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. Paramount Television and 20th Television will produce the upcoming Disney Plus series.
