Joker Director Todd Philips Possibly Making A Two-Face Movie

Todd Philips, director of the highly successful Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix could be developing Two-Face.

The Joker film, even though it was based on the Batman comic books, took itself more seriously than any other Batman film. Todd Philips succeeded in making Joker more of a character study of a depressed man pushed into insanity. It doesn’t help that he’s having difficulty with his life, living in a crime ridden city of Gotham, and he has a neurological disorder that makes him laugh uncontrollably.

The movie was a massive success. The movie had a budget of $55 million, and was able to get a whopping $1.073 Billion in the box office. That is 19.5 times the production budget. Financially, it’s the most successful film to date. Even though Aquaman had a higher box office with $1.148 billion, the movie-budget was $160 million. In other words, the Joker film was much more profitable for Warner Bros than Aquaman by over $30M. For sure that Warner will push more films similar to the Joker.

Now, can you imagine making another film in the same vein as Joker, but focus on another Batman villain? This time, it’s Bruce Wayne’s best friend, Harvey Dent.

It has been reported by Giant Freakin Robot that Todd Philips is already developing Two-Face. Not only will it feature a new villain as it’s main character of the film, it’s reported that it’s also going to be set in the same universe as Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. In other words, Todd Philips is making his own Jokerverse. This is interesting mainly because just like the Joker, Harvey Dent has a dissociative identity disorder (also known as Multiple Personality Disorder). It would be interesting to see how Harvey Dent, a known successful lawyer shift into a criminal who relies on a coin to make his critical decisions.

We’ve seen a couple of versions of Two-Face in the silver screen. Tommy Lee Jones took a role in Batman Forever (1995), wherein we never really saw his progression on how and why he became the villain. The film did show his origin, but never really got into his mindset. Meanwhile, we got an amazing version of Harvey Dent and Two-Face in The Dark Knight (2008) played by Aaron Eckhart. Although, the character portrayed in that one didn’t have dissociative identity disorder. He was just pushed to insanity by the Joker.

It would be interesting to see something deeper than audiences have previously seen before.

But take this news with a grain of salt. Todd Philips just announced that his Joker film already has sequel being developed. It already has a working script and is tentatively titled Joker: Folie à Deux. So, if there is a Two-Face film being developed, it’s still going to take a while before we see any progress with this.
