James Cameron is considering relinquishing his directorial seat for Avatar 4 and 5 to focus on other interests. While the director has pushed the boundaries of cinematography time and time again, he is still exploring and innovating. Years after Avatar, Cameron now shows a more expansive world in Pandora and the Na’vi.
An article from Empire shares that James Cameron is considering to let another director helm the 4th and 5th movies. Having worked on Avatar: The Way of Water back-to-back with the third movie, the director shared that Avatar has been an all-consuming ride for him. Fans have highly anticipated the upcoming sequel and for more than a decade, they have waited patiently to see the instalment. The third movie is yet to have its official title but is already positioned to premiere in 2024. As for the following movies, he has expressed uncertainty whether he may still handle its direction.

As a cinematographer, James Cameron has always looked for newer, better and perhaps grander ways to tell his story. Once his pieces are all in place, he does intend to push his other visions forward. Because Avatar requires so much from the director, he will not have time or attention to spare for other projects. This makes him think of the possibility of turning over the director’s seat to someone else and stay on the project as a producer for the next movies. He admits:
The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming. I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.
However, this is stilll just a point to consider for the director. By days’ end, Avatar is his brainchild. Everything from Pandora, its landscape and other biomes, the natives and their culture are from his concept. He has likened his work on Avatar to that of Lord of the Rings.

It’s now become one of the most astoundingly written world people get to visit through his movie and coming movies. He further explains:
Everything I need to say about family, about sustainability, about climate, about the natural world, the themes that are important to me in real life and in my cinematic life, I can say on this canvas. I got more excited as I went along. Movie four is a corker. It’s a motherfucker. I actually hope I get to make it. But it depends on market forces. Three is in the can so it’s coming out regardless. I really hope that we get to make four and five because it’s one big story, ultimately.
Whether he takes the helm for Avatar 4 and 5 or not, it would be a guaranteed work of art. Avatar has welcomed us to the world not of this earth but certainly have attributes that can be compared to the planet. The message of the movie speaks for what our own home world is going through. That is one of the ultimate goals that James Cameron wish to leave among the audience.
Avatar: The Way of Water comes to cinemas this Christmas season.
