In Case Grant Morrison Replaces Russell T Davies On Doctor Who

Grant Morrison has their hopes in writing for Doctor Who once Russell T Davies thinks of moving on from the series.

In an article from BleedingCool Grant Morrison expresses their hope in writing for Doctor Who. In fact, he already has a whole season in mind.

The hopeful writer actually  wrote a number of Doctor Who comic strips for Doctor Who Magazine some 40+ years ago. As a writer, Grant Morrison has made a name in comic book writing. Their works include DC’s Arkham Asylum, JLA, Batman and Robin to Marvel’s New X-Men. They have also written and produced projects for television such as Brave New World, Happy! and Beware the Batman.

Morrison shares he has pitched stories to Doctor Who:

I think there were two potentially great stories out of the five or so I pitched – one was a ‘timey-wimey’ story designed to work as a high concept Doctor Who feature film and the other a heart-wrenchingly emotive Railway Children episode set in World War 2 – nevertheless, even after a few attempts at refining the first idea, I didn’t make the grade. Having now worked at all stages of TV production, I know exactly where I went wrong in emphasising certain aspects of the story over the ones the BBC were keener for to have in foreground.

While his pitch may not have turned out the way he had hoped, it still brought out a silver lining as he was able to create monsters for the show.

One of my stories involved meeting the Doctor as a child, which then happened in a very different way in the episode Listen. I’d also created some new monsters they really liked so while unwilling to commission any scripts from me, the BBC did offer to buy out my baddies! As an offer, it left a lot to be desired and I’d have got more busking Oasis songs for an hour, so I declined and kept the characters in the event I ever got another shot.

This gave him much encouragement to conceptualize more and keep more cards close to his heart so to speak.

It would seem that Doctor Who holds a special place in Grant Morrison’s creative heart. Indeed, it could even be a classic case of mismatched timing. The perfect time and opportunity will come to Morrison for one of the longest-running sci-fi series in television history.

A few years ago, I befriended my personal favourite UK auteur, who also did a few Doctor Who episodes. Following many chats, we ended up with a whole fantasy season of Doctor Who adventures which can only be described as revolutionary! We have big, mad ideas for the Doctor, the Companions, the Daleks, the season arc, the TARDIS and everything else, that not only fit with canon and are blindingly obvious but have never been done before! So there does exist what I can only describe as an ultimate Doctor Who pitch, poised to materialize, awaiting the day Russell Davies tires of the Time Lord!

Morrison explains the importance of sci-fi in techradar.com and discussed Doctor Who as well. He said:

And in more recent times, I’ve always loved Doctor Who, and I particularly loved when Steven Moffat was writing Doctor Who,” Morrison continues. “Because again, he’s a very meticulous writer who constructs these beautiful puzzle boxes of plot. More recently, I really loved Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You, which to me was up there with (Dennis) Potter as some of the best stuff I think I’ve ever seen in television for a long, long time.

When TechRadar asked how come he has never written for the series, his reply:

Well, it kind of did happen. I did pitch a couple, but it didn’t work out. One of these days, I’ve got a whole season worked out, so I’m sure it’ll happen eventually.
