Netflix’s Arcane is this year’s Best Animated Program at the prestigious Emmy Awards during the Creative Arts ceremony. For the first time, an animated show from a streaming service bagged the award. Notably, the show won over Bob’s Burgers, Rick and Morty, The Simpsons and What If…?. Ultimately, Arcane reigned supreme this year. And, audiences and critics applaud it as an award that the show truly deserve.
Arcane bested the category regular nominees this year, bringing the prize home to Netflix after years of entering the category with Big Mouth and BoJack Horseman. In a report from Deadline, Christian Linke, series co-creator, accepted the award saying:
Thank you this. It’s a big deal for us as we come from video games. It’s been amazing to see the world embrace our characters and our stories so thanks to Netflix who believed in us from the beginning, thanks to Riot Games, who worked on the whole IP… and to all the people that have been with our game and League of Legends for the last 12 years or so who helped make it as big as it is now.

League of Legends fans rejoiced as their favorite game’s animated adaptation definitely did not disappoint. Many have predicted their win as soon as the nominations were official. Arcane encapsulated a well-delivered story with multi-dimensional characters. Netflix released the 9-episode series in batches of three every week. Each release has the cinematic appeal covering one full story. People felt that the streaming giant showed a trilogy in a span of three weeks.
Last year, the series premiered November 6th and captured audiences familiar and new to its characters. Initially, the series garnered critical acclaim upon its release. Based on the League of Legends game, production announced the project during the game’s 10th anniversary back in 2019. Co-creators Linke and Alex Yee were at the heart of the project that Fortiche produced under the supervision of Riot Games. By the end of the first season last year, Netflix gave the green light for the second season. Production for the second season is now on schedule for late 2022 or early 2023 release.
Technically, the series were under the direction of Pascal Charrue and Arnaud Delord starring Hailee Steinfeld as Vi and Ella Purnell as Jinx. Joining Steinfeld and Purnell are Kevin Alejandro as Jayce, Harry Lloyd as Viktor, Mick Wingert as Heimerdinger and many more talented actors who lent their voice to the characters.

Naturally, Arcane quickly set the bars high for animated adaptation of video games not only for Netflix but other platforms as well. In fact, IMDb scores the series 9/10, which is extraordinary for animated shows. Meanwhile, the series proved that videogames can get better written stories and well-rounded characters if given the chance. It is now among the top performing titles for Netflix across 52 countries. Absolutely astounding and intriguing, viewers are patiently waiting for the follow up season.
Story-wise, the dynamics between characters such as Vi and Powder growing up to be Jinx were dramatic, unhurried and engaging. All the while, the politics of the world as well as the impending threat of war makes sense. Viewers empathize in every character. Thematically, he contrasts between Piltover and Zaun are undeniable as the story progresses but viewers know these are but two regions among many that will soon be disclosed in the story.
As this year’s winner, audiences look forward to the stories that lie ahead for Season 2 of Netflix’s Arcane.
