Fake Mandarin Ben Kingsley Back In Disney Plus’ Wonder Man

Wonder Man, a new MCU series, is coming to Disney Plus featuring the return of Ben Kingsley as the once fake Mandarin, Trevor Slattery. Marvel Studios is brewing a new series featuring Wonder Man also known as Simon Williams. Variety reports that Ben Kingsley will reprise his role Trevor Slattery for the upcoming series.

This will not be the first time we will see Kingsley reprise the role in the MCU. His first appearance was during Ironman 3. At the time, Slattery turns out to be a hired actor to be the front of the antagonist group proclaiming himself as The Mandarin. Second, he appears in “All Hail The King”, which shows a group breaking Slattery out from prison. Third and latest appearance is during Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings where he is prisoner to Xu Wenwu, the real Mandarin.

The announcement from Variety includes Destin Daniel Cretton on board as the director. In turn, this is part of his over all deal with Marvel Studios. He will also stand as executive producer and co-creator on the Wonder Man series, with Andrew Guest as head writer and co-creator. This firmly connects the upcoming series to the MCU basing from the events of Shang Chi.

The connection Wonder Man has with Trevor Slattery is presumably due to their common profession. Both characters are entertainers being actors and in Simon Williams’ case, stuntman. Even though there may not be any other information available as to the presence of Kingsley’s character in the series, sources have said that he plays a major role.

In the comics, Simon Williams is heir to Williams Innovations. A company in direct competition to Stark Industries. After Simon’s death, he too the reins of the company but due to his ineptitude, the company lost its competitive edge in the market. In desperation, he sought his brother’s help who advised him to take illegal means in order to keep the company afloat. Soon, the illegal transactions came to light and Simon faced trial eventually leading to his prison sentence.

Having caught wind that Williams blames Tony Stark for his downfall, Baron Zemo arranged for his bail. He then agreed to be part of Zemo’s experiments. Finally, he received what Zemo calls “ionic ray” treatment. This treatment gained Simon superhuman strength and durability. However, Zemo emphasized that his altered body now has a different metabolism that will require regular dose of unspecified antidote to keep him alive. Simon accepts his situation and resolves to satisfy Zemo’s plans in order to keep himself alive. From then on, Zemo called him Wonder Man. Thus began his pursuit of the Avengers.

In a staged fight, Wonder Man gained the confidence of the Avengers. He discloses his bodily condition, which the Avengers worked to help him find the cure. Eventually, as part of his task from Zemo, he leads the Avengers into a trap. But, at this time, he could not find it in himself to lead the team to their demise. Thus he followed his conscience and eventually truly joined the ranks of the Avengers.

The return of Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery truly can be due to Simon Williams’ day job as an actor and stuntman. Williams took advantage of his indestructible body and superhuman strength to perform death defying scenes.

No other confirmation comes from Marvel regarding the new series. We do assume they will mention this in the upcoming D23 among other announcements. Until then, we wait.
