With three movies in the franchise, Eddie Redmayne is now unsure whether there will be more movies for JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts. The Fantastic Beasts franchise is a spinoff from the Harry Potter which belong to Warner Bros. Unlike its predecessor, the series that focuses on Redmayne’s Newt Scamander have been disappointing the studio. Even though they are still able to gain from the production budget, the numbers aren’t really promising a strong potential for a fourth instalment.
In an interview with Indiewire for his latest movie The Good Nurse, he answered if he knew about upcoming instalments. Initially, the franchise had a 5-movie plan for Fantastic Beasts. However, after many challenges that the production went through affecting its box office performance, Warner Bros may not be keen to making more.

According to TheNumbers Fantastic Beasts display a downward trend in the worldwide box office. If one is to look at US Domestic Box office, the three movies actually generated the studio quite a loss in their run. The margin of handsome revenue primarily comes from the International Box Office. Of all three, it’s the first movie that performed best.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them had a budget of $180M. Domestically it got $234M and Worldwide it totaled $811.7M. That is the best set of numbers punched under the franchise.
Two years later, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald had a slightly higher budger of $200M. This movie started the downtrend on the Domestic Box Office which only reflected $160M. However, thanks to the international market, the Worldwide Box Office chalked in $648M.
The least performing entry is the third movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. It premiered April this year and its saddening performance in the Box Office could have resulted from various factors. From CoVid health protocols to production issues of a certain publicly shown trial, these practically pushed moviegoers not to buy a ticket. Thus, from a retained budget of $200M, Domestic Box Office showed only $96M and total Worldwide Box Office of $405M. Just possibly enough to cover the budget and marketing of the movie.

There is heaviness in the feeling that the series may not actually get the last two movies to see the light of day. Eddie Redmayne’s uncertainty is a large enough sign that Scamander’s story has to settle for literary not theatrical completion. Answering the question, Redmayne said:
I don’t. It’s more a question for J. K. Rowling and David Yates and Warners, but I don’t know, I’m afraid. I can’t add to that. I love playing Newt, he’s a sweet man.
With the shape that Warner Bros is in right now as well as controversies it would have to address, should the movie push through? Understandably, it could just be that it isn’t the right time yet.
Now if only we have a time-turner, then…
