Universal Pictures just dropped the newest trailer for Super Mario Bros and here is a quick list of every Easter Egg we saw! While we are still adjusting to Mario’s voice, Chris Pratt, we bask in the abundance of game references in the trailer. Seems like there is something to discover in every frame. Nintendo is really pulling all the stops for the movie’s access to Super Mario Bros elements. Of course, it is a movie titled Super Mario right? And, Illumination somehow has its playground.
So here it goes:
Easter Eggs In New Super Mario Bros Trailer
Mario enters a coliseum and faces Donkey Kong! Quite fitting to open the trailer with Kong as his game actually introduced Mario to the world. The 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong featured Mario as the controllable player or hero of the game. In DK, Mario has the mission to save Pauline. The woman that Donkey Kong abducted similar to the story of King Kong. While the DK game refers to Mario as Jumpman due to his abilities. Because well, he jumps.
Cranky Kong (Fred Armisen) sits beside Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), whom Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) accompanies throughout the time. Despite the fact that Kong is beating Mario up, the scene seems to be in a lighter tone. Definitely not along the lines of an attack towards any kingdom.
Charlie Day voices Luigi who appears to have the Luigi’s Mansion personality. Many of Mario’s classic opponents appeared afterwards, from Bomb-Ombs, Shy Guys, Goombas, Piranha Swoops, Bullet Bill, Cheep Cheeps and Snifits.
Well, the whole movie’s premise is of course not a secret: Bowser means to conquer the world. We already know what he did with the Penguin Land. Somehow, Mario and Luigi get into a “pipeline” of sorts and Mario bounces into the Mushroom Kingdom without Luigi. Luigi apparently faces Bowser’s minions and then becomes the villain’s captive.
Easter Eggs In New Super Mario Bros Trailer
Heavy Spoilers on YouTube broke down the Easter Eggs in detail. We can only assume that Mario will save Luigi and pursue a way home. In order to do that, he will have to help Princess Peach, Cranky Kong and the rest of the game world.
The trailer paid homage to a lot of game references. Mario moves around an obstacle course possibly to prepare him to face the Koopa King. The place is highly reminiscent of the original Super Mario Bro games complete with the rotating “flame”, dropping planks, question mark cubes and some potted plants.
I have three favorite parts of the trailer. First is Mario flying in his Tanooki Suit. Second is Princess Peach using a Fire Flower and changing her dress. Finally, the Mario Kart with his crew on the Rainbow Road.
With all these nods to games and previous Nintendo iterations, the movie is truly in position to be one of the best game-into-movie ever!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie pipes into theaters on April 7, 2023.
