Duffer Brothers Developing New Live Action Death Note On Netflix

Death Note gets another live-action adaptation on Netflix, this time from the Duffer Brothers with writer Halia Abdel-MeguidHopefully, fans will better appreciate the new adaptation in development from the creators of the phenomenal Stranger Things. Furthermore, their chosen writer could very well have a better insight to the franchise.

According to Deadline, the new live action adaptation of Death Note is part of an overall deal they have with Matt & Ross Duffer’s Upside-Down banner. Notably, Death Note will not be the first time Abdel-Meguid will write about a monster or contemporary horror. Because, she penned Monsters in Philadelphia described as the fascinating true story of Dr. Thomas Mütter, a brilliant and eccentric surgeon who revolutionized the practice of cosmetic surgery in the mid-19th century. The movie bagged the 2018, The Black List: Sloan Fellowship award.

Scary, disturbing and fantastical stories bring the Duffer Brothers and Abdel-Meuid together. Because they also are working on Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman.

What could be somewhat a relief for fans is the fact that their adaptation will not be connected to the first one also from Netflix. The 2017 Death Note got disappointing reviews from critics and audiences alike. This is one of the few times critics and audiences reflect the same impression. In Rotten Tomatoes, the live action adaptation of the famous anime only got 37% on the TomatoMeter with 76 reviews and an even lower 23% Audience Score with 5000+ ratings.

This speaks volumes for Netflix to do better this time around. Hopefully with the Duffer Brothers and Abdel-Meuid, they could do justice to the material.

Understandably, some fans are still wary and hope they just leave the series alone. One comment from a reader named Tomas on Deadline’s post said:

Several produceras of the 2017 movie is in the project?
How the hell were they not fired after the 2017 movie?
Its the worst abomination in adaptation history.
Yes, worse than Rings of Prime.
Not in how much damage Its done, LotR is infinitely bigger and more Important than Death Note so the damage is far greater but yes, Rings of Prime is actually a better and more accurate adaptation than Netflix Death Note.

Sweet Jesus, these producers should be in prison… But theyre not even fired.
Disgracful.

Producers for this upcoming Death Note who were also in the first are Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Jonathan Eirich and Miri Yoon. They represent Rideback and Vertigo in the production.

The original source material for the project is the Japanese manga that Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata created. The protagonist of the series is Light Yagami who is a teen genius that comes across the mysterious notebook, the Death Note. The notebook belongs to Shinigami Ryuk who grants the user the ability to end anyone’s life. To do so, he only needs to write the name on the pages of the Death Note. Light proceeds to rid the world of people he decides to be immoral to achieve a crime-free world. He assumes the name Kira. Later, police authorities pursue Kira under the leadership of detective L.

This is pretty much what happened in the first adaptation. However, the new project has stated that it will be an entirely different version of the intellectual property.

Here is hoping for the best.
