Disney’s The Black Hole Developing As A Series

The Black Hole, Disney’s dark sci-fi movie is being developed as a Disney Plus series.

During the late 1970’s, Star Wars was the name of the game in movie theaters. A lot of movie companies tried to follow suit with tons of sci-fi material with known franchises, new IPs and Star Wars rip-offs. There was Flash Gordon (1980s) starring Sam Jones that comes from the comic strips originally released in 1934. Star Trek The Motion Picture also came out in 1979, which rebooted the classic series (1966-1969). Even James Bond joined in the sci-fi action with Moonraker (1979).

Disney on the other hand made “The Black Hole” which is not anything similar to Star Wars. While Star Wars was a space fantasy opera, The Black Hole is science fiction and it’s closer to Star Trek and Alien. It actually feels more like a disaster movie. Note that it is also the first Disney movie to have that PG rating. It was really ground breaking for Disney. All previous Disney movies were made for general audiences. Before The Black Hole, they made movies like Return to Witch Mountain, Pete’s Dragon, Freaky Friday.

It’s been reported by Giant Freakin Robot that it’s a series based on the 1979 film. It’s strange to see that an underperforming movie will revive into a series. The movie had a budget of $20 million and its box office return was only $35.8 million. The movie starred Maximillian Schell (The Man in the Glass Booth), Anthony Perkins (Psycho, Catch-22), Robert Forster (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad), Joseph Bottoms (Holocaust), Yvette Mimeux (The Time Machine), Ernest Borgnine (Airwolf, Spongebob Square Pants), Roddy McDowall (Fright Night, A Bug’s Life), Slim Pickens (Dr. Strangelove, Blazing Saddles) and Tom McLoughlin.

Personally, the premise is interesting, although it does have a dark tone. I do remember kind of enjoying the movie. looking back, I understand the potential for it as a series. It involves the crew of the USS Palomino discovering a long lost spaceship that has been missing for 20 years called the USS Cygnus. Inside they discover that the crew is missing and the only one that remains is the scientist, Dr. Reinhardt. I won’t tell the entire story here, but I will say that the movie has a mad scientist, a killer robot, death and lobotomy. Yeah, it’s not really a light thing for a Disney movie. It even has a mind bending ending that is hard to grasp or understand, unless you are into the what if scenarios once you get into the black hole.

Regardless of how I enjoyed The Black Hole, it is a weird piece of Disney history. I rarely know a person who even knows about the movie.

I would like to see a modern remake of this, but I do understand that a movie is not the perfect medium for this. A series might be a better medium since it can dive into more of the crew and the scientist. With the new discoveries with what a Black Hole is, I’d really like to see a modern remake of this. I do wonder if they will make this a family-friendly movie for the general Disney Plus audience. Or will they decide to make this because it’s one of the stories that might fit the adult oriented audience for Disney Plus’ new adult content section.

More recent movies that have similar storyline would be Event Horizon and Sunshine. Having the sci-fi horror or sci-fi thriller genre, both movies played the premise of a ship finding another long lost or believed to have perished ship. This discovery led to the problems and challenges the crew need to face. Ending of the movies are not so happy in a sense that some died or made sacrifices to vanquish the main villain.

Is Disney hoping for a better second time around? Maybe the Black Hole was just too different at the time? Rebooting is the game these days, but I do find it interesting that they are reviving even failed or old franchises. We did just report that Sky High is also considered to be rebooted. Actually, this gives me hope that Tron will continue in the streaming service. For sure, the world of movies and TV are very different now when you compare them to a couple of years ago. Streaming has become the norm because of this pandemic.

Because of this, people have been craving for something different and something more. Stories that best explore characters and details through a series than in theatrical releases.

Maybe it’s time to re-visit the Black Hole.
