Disney Plus Ironheart Series now has Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes as directors together with Ryan Coogler‘s Banner Proximity as producer.
A report from Deadline updates the development of the Ironheart series for Disney Plus. Directors Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes are now at the helm for the upcoming series featuring Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams for the titular role.

Among her most recent works, Samantha Bailey directed East of La Brea, 3 episodes of Dear White People, 4 episodes of Grown-ish. There’s also an episode each from The Chi, Diary of a Future President, Mixed-ish and First Wives Club. Her frustrations as a stage actress pushed her to write a self-produced web series entitled You’re So Talented. The piece gained her a Gotham Award nomination back in 2015. By 2017, Bailey co-produced the web series Brown Girls that tackled two young women exploring and discovering their queer identity in both professional and personal relationships. Brown Girls is the series that gave her the Primetime Emmy Award nomination. It’s notable that her works explore personal struggles, development, discovery and acceptance in theme. This most likely makes her one of the best fit directors to deliver Riri Williams to the screen.
Angela Barnes started directing as early as 2005 with one episode of the TV series Eve. From then on she built her reputation in directing with 22 credits to her name. In February 2022, Barnes talked in Princeton about her career path, the importance of inclusivity in the entertainment industry, and her work on the show “Mythic Quest.” She noted that a character gained a backstory after she worked with the actress and another black writer.

Ryan Coogler’s production company, Proximity, has come on as producers. Their previous projects include the movies Space Jam: A New Legacy, Judas and the Black Messiah, Creed II. The list includes the short film entitled “The Castle Tale“. They also produced the documentaries Homeroom, and 30 for 30. Ongoing projects include Creed III and another documentary entitled “Underrated“. Future projects together with Ironheart include an untitled Wakanda TV series Project, Scenes for Minors, Wrong Answer and Bitter Root.
Bailey and Barnes behind the camera for Thorne’s portrayal of Riri Williams will definitely bring Ironheart to life. We know these women know Riri’s heart. Thus, they will be able to show the world the personality of Riri inside-out.
