Bartha will reprise his role Riley Poole as a guest in the series to fortify its connection with the movies. The actor portrayed the computer expert best friend of Nicolas Cage‘s Benjamin Franklin Gates, the film’s lead character. Two National Treasure films were released. One at 2004 and another at 2007. Both movies totaled a worldwide box office record of $788.6M.
Jerry Bruckheimer will executive produce the series with Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, Jonathan Littman, Kristie Anne Reed, Jon Turteltaub, Mira Nair and Rick Muirragui. Nair will direct the series with Muirragui as the writer. The series is already filming in Baton Rouge.
Fans have long awaited the third installment of the franchise. Equally anticipated is Nicolas Cage’s return as Ben Gates. Some fans are actually on the fence with the news of the upcoming series. They are asking why is Disney developing a National Treasure series that won’t feature Cage’s character in the first place?

The current streaming service game requires both familiarity and novelty. The first allows a new series’ ease in introduction. The second allows the new series to depart from the old story and bring some new twists to the tale. Perhaps because the long overdue third movie is still in the works, this series has come into play. A new set of characters in pursuit of a great Pan-American treasure hidden in layers of mystery, intrigue and puzzles would be something to watch out for.
Also, production has not categorically said that Cage or his character will not be in the series. There may be something in store for that yet. The Disney Plus series expands the “National Treasure” franchise together with the third film that is on the drawing board.
