CW The Flash Gets Richard Harmon As Captain Boomerang

In a story update for the upcoming Season 9 of The Flash on CW, Richard Harmon comes into the series as Captain Boomerang. The actor audiences know for his role, John Murphy, in The 100 is now Owen Mercer in the newest and the last season of television’s Scarlet Speedster. Eric Wallace’s The Flash starring Grant Gustin ends its near-decade run with upcoming Season 9.

According to Deadline, the network releases information as to the developing finale season for The Flash. In CW’s description:

A new post-Crisis Captain Boomerang has recently been released from Iron Heights with a chip on his shoulder. But with the twinkle in his eye disguises a dangerous and violent threat to Central City.

Previously, another Captain Boomerang has appeared in CW’s Arrow. This happened during the fifth season where the character was played by actor Nick E. Tarabay. In that version his name was Digger Harkness aka Captain Boomerang.

Meanwhile, Harmon’s character is a new Captain Boomerang whose identity is also Owen Mercer. In the comics, Owen Mercer is the second Captain Boomerang, son of the first. Mercer’s story progression steps from hero to villain. At one point he became a member of the Suicide Squad then joined Nightwing’s Outsiders.

Considering The Flash has gone through the Crisis, we wonder how will the production bring the second Captain Boomerang into play. Harmon has performed quite well for characters who have conflicted morals or those with inner battles. Mercer has been a character bent on making his father proud. Also, he is one who has most of the time expressed or at least showed how he truly feels. Perhaps it’s also because there is the prevalent need to prove himself in order to belong.

Still, a new Captain Boomerang does not explain about the new avatar that the season 8 finale alluded to. Furthermore, there is still a new Frost and at the very last few moments where the blue shard appeared activated. None of those may have been related to Captain Boomerang. But like what Barry Allen told Iris:

We won’t know until that day happens but whenever that day comes and whoever that avatar is, we’ll be ready for them.

Gustin is the series titular hero Barry Allen/The Flash with Candace Patton as Iris West-Allen. Danielle Panabaker joins them as Caitlin Snow aka Killer Frost and Jesse L. Martin as Detective Joe West. Many more actors comprise the long running superhero series from the popular Arrowverse of CW based on DC characters. The Flash come to television from Bonanza Productions in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are the series’ executive producers.

Run Barry! Run!
