Craig Zobel Might Take The Helm For The Penguin HBO Max

Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe is very much alive as Craig Zobel is considering to helm The Penguin, a spin off series for HBO Max. Apparently, Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t hitting the breaks on this one. Other than possibly executive producing the series, it’s possible that Zobel may direct a certain number of episodes for the series.

Discussingfilm.net shares the development in the production stating even though Zobel is already on board as an executive producer, he could also be the director. Starring Colin Farrell, who is also an executive producer, The Penguin aims to commence production early 2023.

Colin Farrell returns to his phenomenal Oswald Cobblepot portrayal and he is quoted saying:

the world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot. I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.

The series’ showrunner and writer will be Lauren LeFranc. LeFranc has also had a hand at producing and writing for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Other projects include an Untitled The Batman Spinoff other than The Penguin, Impulse, and Hemlock Grove. In the press release for The Penguin from HBO Max, LeFranc states:

I have long been a fan of the world of the Batman, and Matt’s film is such a powerful and bold entry into the canon. I am excited and humbled to continue telling stories in the grimy world of Gotham City – and what better excuse to channel my inner villain than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot?

Furthermore, the writer states:

I am thrilled to work with Colin, Matt, Dylan, 6th & Idaho, Warners, and HBO Max as we work to bring this story to the screen.

The Batman movie director Matt Reeves is on board as Producer together with Dylan Clark. Both have an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television through their respective companies: 6th & Idaho Productions and Dylan Clark Productions. Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan are executive producers with Zobel, and Rafi Crohn is a co-executive producer.

Craig Zobel is a two-time Emmy Award nominee for his work on Mare of Easttown. Currently, Mare of Easttown is what people can consider his prized work. Other than 7 Emmy nominations, 3 of which they won, it also won him Best Limited Series or Anthology Series or TV Special in the 2021 Pena de Prata Awards. Furthermore, he also won Outstanding Producer of Limited or Anthology Series Television in 2022 PGA Awards. Prior to Mare of Easttown, he also worked on One Dollar, Westworld, The Leftovers and American Gods, among others.

Amidst news on canceled DC shows, The Batman world that Reeves created now delivers The Penguin through HBO Max. Should Craig Zobel truly take on the helm for the series, there will be no doubt on the show’s intensity. Gotham City gets to show more of its story through the series. The Penguin will show just how dark the streets of Gotham can be. The timetable for the production sets its possible release mid to late 2024.
