Craig McCracken Reboots The Powerpuff Girls For Hanna-Barbera

Along with Foster’s Home for Imaginary FriendsCraig McCracken is writing reboots of The Powerpuff Girls for Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe. IPs are either getting reboots or adaptations for different media these days. Not only to keep itself updated but also reach a broader audience for its stories.

After creating Wander Over Yonder for Disney and Kid Cosmic for Netflix, McCracken comes back to Hanna-Barbera for the two projects. Cartoon Network Studios President Sam Register ecstatically shared his glee:

The Hanna-Barbera homecoming of Craig was an opportunity we could not pass up. Along with his unparalleled sense of fun and imagination, he’s bringing two of his greatest works in ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ and ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,’ and we are so excited for these characters to be a part of the new legacy taking shape at the studio.

Generations of kids have enjoyed the stories from the two projects way back in the 90s. Powerpuff Girls had all the fun and adventure game down. They go about their crazy antics as Professor Utonium’s daughters whom he created accidentally with Chemical X. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are the three girls who take on a number of villains. The villains include Mojo Jojo, The Amoeba Boys, Fuzzy Lumpkins, HIM, Rowdyruff Boys and many more. The reboot will feature old and new villains for the girls.

Whereas, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends comes back with a new cast of imaginary friends. Mac and Bloo continues on with their daily adventures with new friends in the reboot.

Indeed, it’s exciting to learn that the creator himself is opening new chapters for his characters in reboots. Generations growing up with these stories would be happy to share the nostalgia and welcome new, younger brood into the fandom.

It’s also important to note that the live action adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls is still on going at the CW. The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz said that the series is actually in redevelopment. In his words:

The reason you do pilots is because, sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner [Bros. TV] studios.

In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why we didn’t want to go forward with what we had. Tonally, it might’ve felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might’ve felt. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And so in this case, we felt, let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.

There is still the chance for The Powerpuff Girls to save the world before bedtime!
