20th Century is working on a new Alien movie and reports say that Cailee Spaeny is in talks to join the project. This is no longer surprising as the Aliens IP is worth a total of $1.63B from a total budget of $475M for 8 movies. It’s only a matter of time until 20th Century decides to pick it up again. The time has come.
Aside from the project having Fede Alvarez as its director and Scott Free as its producer, no other information is available. 20th Century is keeping other details under wraps. However, the word is that Alvarez’s idea for the movie catapulted the project status to top priority. According to Deadline, the untitled Alien movie now has early 2023 as its target release.

From the 8 movies starting 1979 to 2017, the IP covered the original sci-fi horror, then sci-fi action and drama genre. Alien jumpstarted the franchise starring Sigourney Weaver as Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley. So successful was this franchise that it even had a crossover with another IP, which is the Predator. Aliens vs. Predator even had two movies to its story thread. The other movies that followed tackled origins or prequels of the franchise.
Many fans aired their concerns as to the way the story seems to “not end”. Somehow, the original story, the prequel story and even the crossover story have no clear closure or wrap up. There are even those who say that the developing movie may be another potential loose end. Naturally, there are also those who want to see a new movie with Weaver again.
How Alvarez plans to go with his storyline is still something to look forward to. He shares the writing credits with Rodo Sayagues. Sayagues has horror and other genres mixed with horror in the bag. The project will also not be the first time he writes for Alvarez. The two worked on 2021 television series Calls, 2013 Evil Dead, and 2016 Don’t Breathe.

Meanwhile, Spaeny is rather busy lately with the filming of Priscilla for the titular role. She recently concluded production of Civil War and Unlimited World. Among her latest works are the television series The First Lady as Anna Eleanor Roosevelt and Mare of Easttown as Erin McMenamin.
Even though 20th Century has yet to confirm, sources say that Spaeny is the one on top of the list to take the lead role. This untitled Alien movie could be anything from a reboot, a spin off, a continuation or a prequel. The fact of the matter is that there are so many questions that are still open. Because of this, the franchise can go into any direction which is both interesting and concerning at the same time.
