AMC’s The Walking Dead Rick Grimes And Michonne Spinoff Is A Go

SDCC serves up AMC’s The Walking Dead spinoff where Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira reprises Rick Grimes and Michonne. Small Screen reports that the series is actually happening. Furthermore, its plan is to resolve many questions that the season finale has left out.

The dance on whether Lincoln steps back in or not in the series is finally clear. The upcoming story flow must really be a beautiful wrap up for the story that Gurira is back to help realize it. As a writer, we believe she knows how much of a closure Michonne needs for the series.

Initially, their spinoff was to be a movie. But, perhaps there is still so much story to flesh out that they need the it to delivered as a series. And rightly so, The Walking Dead started as a series. Thus, it fits to end it with a series. And this time, it ends with Rick Grimes.

The two characters are long-time fan favorites in the show. They began as dependable co-members of a well-knit surviving group. Grimes has been the group’s leader and Michonne came near the end of the second season. In the latter series, their companionship developed into a deeper relationship that Michonne became a mother figure for Rick’s son Carl.

For months within the development of the final season, the reappearance of Rick Grimes has always loomed over the show. People kept thinking is he or is he not alive? Michonne has never stopped searching for him. Michonne has always looked out for those whom she cared deeply for. In the end, she still wants to find Rick for his children and also for herself.

With the ‘unwritten rule’ of No Body Not Dead, Rick has always had that possibility of being alive. Finally, having this spinoff, fans can witness the long standing question being answered.

The spinoff Walking Dead series focusing on Rick and Michonne has the following description:

This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?

Lincoln then stated:

This has been the most extraordinary journey playing Rick Grimes for the best part of a decade. The friendships I’ve made along the way are deep and lasting, so it’s fitting that I finally get to complete the story with Danai and Scott and the rest of the TWD family. I’m so excited to be returning to the screen as Rick, reuniting with Danai as Michonne, and bringing the fans an epic love story to add to the Walking Dead Universe.

To which, Gurira added:

Michonne and this TWD family has meant so much to me, and to continue the journey of these beloved characters, alongside Scott and Andy, both creatively and in front of the camera, and bringing The Walking Dead fans something truly special is just glorious. I can’t wait to pick up the katana again.

Among the panelists, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks Dan McDermott was also present and said:

This is a moment fans of The Walking Dead have been waiting for since Rick disappeared in the helicopter early in season nine, and Michonne journeyed away on a quest to find him the following season. What a great surprise for the fans at this final Comic-Con for the series that launched this universe and made television history. We couldn’t be more excited for a truly epic series finale later this year and to see Andy and Danai return in a new series they helped create, one of three new series coming in 2023 that continue the stories of so many iconic and fan-favorite TWD characters.

Multi-Award winning American writer Scott M. Gimple penned the Walking Dead movie trilogy with Robert Kirkman who is the franchise creator. AMC has Gimple as the series showrunner where Lincoln and Gurira will also be credited as executive producers. Gimple comments:

Rick and Michonne are two of my favourite people and Danai and Andy are two of my favorite people. Working with all of them continues to be a dream come true. The three of us, along with a terrific team of TWD all stars and incredible new voices, are crafting an insane love epic worth the long, long wait.

It appears that the wait to finally find ultimate closure of the series is coming very very soon.
