Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power filmed its first season in New Zealand. Given the expanse of the production, they are looking to maximize their overheads so to speak. Bringing the production into the UK for the follow up seasons is the more cost-effective move. Besides, it still is a business that runs the show.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power costed Amazon a fortune to say the least. With a rights purchase of $250M and estimated multi-season budget of $1B, Amazon bought their seat to the streaming big leagues. Together with the acquisition of the rights for the series, Amazon committed itself to five seasons for this franchise. However, each season will still have to gain its own green light from the studio.

So far the first season had high praises in production aesthetics and character depiction. However, they do have some negative feedback on pacing of the story. Nevertheless, the presentation of the series is truly remarkable. People comment that the series is so well-made that it can rival any epic movie in the theaters. Actually, for a good number of people, the series deserves the big screen.

The story features thousands of years before the timelines of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. J.R.R. Tolkien’s world is still where the series is based from. In its beginning, there is relative peace across the realm. The episodes show Middle-Earth’s Second Age when the forging of the Rings of Power happened. It was during this age when the Dark Lord Sauron started to rise to his power. Tolkien wrote that the Island Kingdom of Numenor falls during this age, which also witnessed the last time Elves and Men considered each other as allies. This is why the series will have at least five seasons in its arc.

Series showrunners are J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay. The Rings of Power has Amazon Studios as its producer in cooperation with HarperCollins and New Line Cinema. Tolkien Estate is on board for consultation.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power began streaming its first season on September 1, 2022. It opened with the first two episodes gaining Amazon the confidence of having the most viewers for a Prime Video premiere. The penultimate and finale episodes of the season will be available by October 7 and 14.

Having found its new home, fans and Amazon Prime Video subscribers can depend on the fact that this only ensures the rest of the promised seasons will surely happen. Tolkien wrote 19 rings of power as backstory for the Ruling Ring. There are Three Rings of the Elves, Seven Rings for the Dwarves, and Nine for Men. Fans expect Amazon Prime’s Rings of Power to show these before the appearance of that…

…One Ring to Rule Them All.
