After Season 1, Amazon Prime Video cancels Sci-Fi series Night Sky starring Oscar winners JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek. Only a little over two months from its release, Amazon Prime Video announces that it will not push through with a succeeding season.
In a report from Deadline, Night Sky did not meet the target viewership numbers despite positive reviews. It reflects 73% Average Tomatometer with 81% Average Audience Score.

Showrunners and executive producers Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly, gave the world a series that also beams its story into outer space. Together with executive producers Jimmy Miller, Sam Hansen and Philip Martin, Amazon Prime Video with Amazon Web Services, SES and Intelsat sent the first episode of the series beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
It cannot get any more science-y than that. For a series tackling a backyard portal to another world, Night Sky brought its pilot beyond the skies.
Simmons and Spacek portray a couple named Irene and Franklin York. The couple discovers a portal that leads to a deserted planet where a young man somehow appears from. Chai Hansen is Jude, who is the young man from the portal that becomes the couple’s “caretaker”. Conflict ensues as it appears that Jude has escaped from a group called the Cult of Caerul. Thus, members of the Cult of Caerul have specific reasons of finding Jude.
Joining JK Simmons, Sissy Spacek and Sam Hansen as cast are Kiah McKirnan, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández and Adam Bartley.

While the show may still have yet to acquire a solid fanbase, it only shows how tight current competition is for streaming services. The demand for gripping, engaging and captivating stories is at its all-time peak. Streaming services compete for audience attention and subscription. With the hope of getting an IP that would grab viewers and secure that subscription. Perhaps Night Sky would have been better delivered as a movie either for theater or for streaming. There could have been a better compact or eventful storytelling had it been done as such. Nevertheless, audiences who have taken the time to watch have given favorable reviews.
Who knows? Night Sky may gain its traction for a cult following as Simmons and Spacek has been noted to have delivered stellar performance. The story is out of this world. Hopefully, in the future, they get the chance to continue to tell it.
