Amazon subscribers saw a new fantasy world in Wheel Of Time. The first season debuted with three episodes last November 19, 2021. Amazon’s Wheel of Time tells of a magical journey where a woman named Moiraine forms a group with young men and women to save the world. She is a member of the Aes Sedai, which is a powerful organization that channels the One Power. Among the individuals she seeks is the prophesized reincarnation of the Dragon. He or she has the destiny to defeat the ultimate evil known as the Dark One.

The series stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, Daniel Henney as al’Lan Mandragoran, and Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara. Madeleine Madden, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Barney Harris (season 1) and Dónal Finn (season 2) joins them as the individuals suspected to be Dragon Reborn. Fares Fares portrays the role of the Dark One.

Season 2 of the Amazon series is at the final leg of post production. Viewers expect an announcement of the Season 2 release dates very soon.

Wheel of Time generated a mix of reactions from viewers but generally favorable in terms of introducing Jordan’s work. Amazon reportedly spent $92M on Season 1 for the Czech Republic filming alone. On top of this, the season has also filmed in Slovenia, Croatia, Spain and Tenerife. IGN reports that the series was so huge that it built its own studio complex in Prague to complete the first season.

Critics gave the season 1 of Wheels of Time the rating or 82% average at the Tomatometer while average audience score reflects 62%. There are noted critics who have said that the show had so much story to tell in such a short span of time. Such that, there are parts of the season that felt hurried and lacking. Nevertheless, EW still found the series “watchable”. They said in their review:

Despite the weak characterization, I still found The Wheel of Time rather watchable. It definitely isn’t lacking in incidents. The writers keep the plot wheel turning as characters are chased from one location to the next, action is adequately sequenced, and magic is performed (albeit rendered goofily).

At this point, perhaps they have worked through their cranks to get their story and character development at the more favorable pace.
