Taylor-Johnson commented when represented Sony in the CineEurope conference in Barcelona. For the tease, he came to talk about Sony’s upcoming movies Bullet Train where he co-stars with Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock and Karen Fukuhara. After presenting a 15-minute video from the movie coming in August 5, he also talked about his other project with Sony about the Russian hunter. He excitedly describes Kraven as:

not an alien, or a wizard. He’s just a hunter, a human with conviction. An animal lover and a protector of the natural world. He’s a very, very cool character.

His description actually contradicts what the comics has depicted Kraven the Hunter to be. Far from being an animal lover, Kraven or Sergei Kravinoff in the comics actually has a reputation for gaming. Hence, “the Hunter”. Born from Russian aristocracy, he got beaten by his father as a boy which he in turn lets out on his half brother Dmitri. After the Bolshevik Revolution, their family had to immigrate to the United Kingdom then to the United States. Dmitri at this point has run away and while apart from the family, grows up to be Chameleon. Meanwhile, Sergei’s father dies leaving him and his mother who had to be taken to an asylum as she had gone insane. In the end, his mother commits suicide and Sergei was left alone to fend for himself. Growing up he remembers his fear of spiders in the asylum.

As an orphan, Sergei Kravinoff survived through his talent for hunting. Eventually, he built a reputation and settled in Africa for a decade. There, he came across a witch doctor’s potion that gave him elevated human speed, strength and agility with the added effect of slowing down his body’s aging process. He used his newfound powers to hunt more and export rare animal skins and ivory for the best price.

By the above summary of Sergei, Kraven the Hunter is quite an altogether different person from Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s description. We wonder if the upcoming movie calls back to this origin then Sergei gets a personal realization to do a 180. He then becomes a protector of the natural world instead of being the world renowned hunter.
